Operating hours (U-Bahn / S-Bahn / night)

  • Mon–Fri (weeknights): U-Bahn runs until ~1:00 AM and S-Bahn until ~1:00–1:30 AM (varies by line). After that, night buses and Metrotram services cover the city.

  • Weekends (Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun nights): U-Bahn and S-Bahn run 24 hours, with lower night frequencies.

  • Main tram routes (Metrotram): operate 24/7, typically every ~30 minutes after midnight.

Metro network: how many lines

  • U-Bahn (metro): 9 linesU1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U6, U7, U8, U9.

  • S-Bahn (urban rail): extensive city/suburban network connecting the center and outer districts, including the Ringbahn (circular line).

Key stops to know (quick navigation)

  • Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Central Station): main hub for S-Bahn/Regional/ICE + many connections.

  • Alexanderplatz: major central/tourist hub with U-Bahn and S-Bahn connections.

  • Friedrichstraße: very central interchange, great for transfers.

  • Zoologischer Garten (Zoo): key hub in the west, also good for buses and connections.

  • Ostkreuz: major interchange in the east (many lines).

  • Warschauer Straße: access to Friedrichshain / East Side Gallery area (plus transfers).

AIRPORT TRANSFER (BER) ↔ city

Where to catch trains: the “Flughafen BER” station is beneath Terminal 1 (level U2); buses depart/arrive in front of T1.

Option 1 — Trains (recommended)

  • FEX (Airport Express): fast link BER ↔ Berlin Hbf, via major nodes such as Ostkreuz.

  • Also available: regional trains and S-Bahn services run multiple times per hour.

Option 2 — S-Bahn

  • S9: connects BER via key city nodes such as Friedrichstraße and Berlin Hbf; typically every ~20 min (with weekend night service).

Option 3 — Buses (useful at night or for specific areas)

  • Dedicated express and night bus services are available, especially useful early morning/late night.

Estimated travel times (approx.)

  • BER → Alexanderplatz (train): ~30 min (can vary by service and time of day).

  • BER → central areas with S-Bahn/train + transfers: often ~35–55 min depending on route and connections.
